Why Go Natural

There are many good reasons to consider forgoing store bought commercial skincare and beauty products and using homemade natural ingredients instead.

For one thing, do-it-yourself (DIY) products tend to be much less expensive since many of the ingredients are already in your kitchen fridge or pantry.

Another compelling reason is compassion. The chemicals used in commercial products, as well as the products themselves, are tested on animals.  Animal testing often involves unimaginable cruelty.

But perhaps the most persuasive argument is health.  Not only the health of your skin - which, in and of itself is a big deal - since your skin is your body's largest "organ" but also your overall health.  Remember that whatever you put anywhere on your body is absorbed into your body through the skin.

>>> What Toxic Chemicals Are You Absorbing?

Toxins in Commercial Products

Most commercial skincare and beauty products are laden with chemicals that are known or suspected to be toxic to humans.  These include artificial colors, fragrance, stabilizers and preservatives.

Scientific studies done to date suggest that the chemicals found in commercial skincare and beauty products (as well as other self-care, hygiene and household products) can potentially have adverse health consequences.
These adverse health consequences include hormone imbalances, allergies, infertility and possibly even cancer.

Best Ingredients for Natural Skin Care

Nature has already provided us with the best skincare ingredients.  Natural skincare "products" contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals and other nutrients that have been studied for their health effects.

Many natural skin care ingredients are also antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral.

Our commercial cosmetics and personal care products are literally contaminated with toxic chemicals and ingredients that have been found harmful to human health.  The U.S. Federal Drug Enforcement Agency (FDA) does little to regulate ingredient safety.  With the exception of only a handful of prohibited substances, U.S. cosmetics companies may use any ingredient or raw material in their products without government review or approval.

In response to consumer demand, a few U.S. cosmetics companies are removing one or more toxic ingredients from some of their products.  However, U.S. cosmetic companies generally maintain that low levels of exposure to the toxins in their products are "safe".  Recent research has debunked this claim.

How can you protect yourself and your family?

You can learn all about the various dangerous ingredients typically found in cosmetics and personal care products, carefully read labels and not buy them.  This would be quite a time-consuming, arduous task.

A more simpler way to ensure the safety and purity of the products you use is to switch to natural ingredients, many of which are already in your kitchen cabinet.

This very excellent infographic entitled "A Guide for Naturally Healthy Skin" lists many of the natural oils that can be used topically and superfoods that can be eaten to moisturize, soothe and repair skin as well as preventing aging or solve problems like acne.

When it comes to skincare, natural oils may just be your skin's best friend.

Oils derived exclusively from fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, flowers and other plants have unique properties that cleanse, heal and repair, calm and soothe, moisturize and renew, and protect the skin.

Some oils can be used to target and treat specific skin conditions and problems, such as aging, acne, scars and eczema.

One of the greatest advantages of using natural oils is that they do not contain industrial chemicals and toxic ingredients that are often found in commercial skincare products.  Some of these ingredients actually harm the skin and may even harm human health when they are absorbed by the body through the skin over a long period of time.

OCM (Oil Cleansing Method) is a 100% natural way to cleanse and moisturize the skin, without exposing the skin or body (through absorption) to harmful industrial chemicals and toxic ingredients often found in commercial facial cleansers and moisturizers.

Considered a highly effective beauty treatment when used on a regular basis, a blend of two or more high quality oils is gently massaged into the skin of the face and neck for several minutes.

Thereafter, a hot (but not scalding) damp washcloth is used to remove the excess oil by wiping it off.   There are several variations of the method itself, including using a warm damp washcloth to apply the oil and covering the face and neck with a hot washcloth for a few seconds before gently rubbing the oil off.

As for the oils that can be used, this can be highly personalized depending on individual skin type and preferences.  As this infographic illustrates, the most simplest OCM blends consist of a certain percentage of castor oil (or hazelnut oil which may work well for normal to dry skin), with the remaining percentage consisting of one or more "carrier" oils.  The carrier oils include:

Sweet Almond Oil (for normal to oily skin)
Avocado Oil (for normal to dry skin)
Jojoba Oil (for acne prone skin)
Olive Oil (for normal to dry skin)
Sunflower Oil (for normal skin)

For many decades now, we've been warned to never, ever to leave the house without wearing a sunscreen with a high SPF.  Indeed, there are very good reasons to protect oneself from overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.  Overexposure to UV radiation is thought to cause premature aging of the skin, suppress the immune system and increase the risks for skin cancer, cataracts and other skin and eye damage.

On the other hand, underexposure to sunlight is thought be causing a vitamin D deficiency in many people.  Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with  increased risk of common cancers, autoimmune diseases, hypertension, infectious diseases, osteopenia, osteoporosis and fractures.

According to the Vitamin D Council, your body is usually able to get all the vitamin D it needs if you regularly expose enough bare skin to the sun.  To learn about safely exposing your bare skin to sunlight (ultraviolet B), read:  How Do I Get the Vitamin D My Body Needs?

Outside these guidelines, consider using a sunscreen that is not laden with toxic chemicals and other potentially dangerous ingredients that are contained in many of the commercial sunscreens.  A more natural alternative is to use certain vegetable, fruit, nut and seed oils that have natural SPF as this infographic illustrates.  These oils include:

✿ Carrot Seed Oil
✿ Raspberry Seed Oil
✿ Wheatgern Oil
✿ Avocado Oil
✿ Coconut Oil
✿ Olive Oil
✿ Macadamia Nut Oil
✿ Almond Oil
✿ Shea Butter
✿ Jojoba Oil

Beautiful skin depends, in part, on a proper skincare program that includes cleansing, exfoliating, moisturizing and protecting the skin from the sun and other elements.  Healthy, glowing skin also depends on diet, exercise and sleep, which are just as (if not more) important as adhering to a daily topical skincare regimen.

This infographic, entitled "Skin Care 101" covers the basics of taking care of your skin properly.

The best cleansers, exfoliators, moisturizers and sunscreen products come from Mother Nature.  Common foods and household items like almond, olive and coconut oils, honey, brown and white sugar, sea salt, lemons, avocados, cucumbers, apple cider vinegar, cornstarch, baking soda and many other fruits, vegetables and herbs can be used in simple combinations to cleanse, exfoliate, moisturize and protect the skin.  The organic versions of these natural ingredients do not contain pesticides and the toxic chemicals that are generally found in great abundance in commercial beauty products.

Proper hydration (i.e., drinking plenty of water) and a diet rich in dark leafy green vegetables, nuts, citrus and other fruits is essential to beautiful, youthful skin.

Exercise (including yoga), relaxation techniques (including meditation) and adequate sleep and rest are another important component of clear, bright and smooth skin.

Potent Cocktails of Chemicals

Most commercial cosmetic and skincare products on the market today are potent cocktails of industrial chemicals.

Toxic Chemicals and Health

As studies continue to link these chemicals to various ailments and chronic health conditions, we are beginning to understand just how harmful these substances may be to our health.

It is becoming a cause of concern when one considers that, in the daily use of these toxic substances, they are being absorbed into our bodies through our skin, our largest organ.

Reducing and Limiting Our Exposure

The good news is that we can greatly reduce and limit or even completely eliminate our exposure to these industrial chemicals by avoiding commercial skincare, and beauty products and making some or all of our own skin care products at home.

Infographic

Many of the DIY skincare recipes are easy and take only a few minutes using completely natural ingredients, some of which are illustrated in this infographic entitled "Natural Skin Care Ingredients".  Most of these ingredients may already be in your pantry or refrigerator or are readily available at your local markets:

 Aloe Vera
 Avocado Oil
 Blueberries
 Coconut Milk (and Coconut Oil)
 Cranberries
 Honey
 Olive Oil
 Pomegranate
 Sugar
 Vitamin C
