Skin Care: 16 Amazing Oils [Infographic]

Natural Skincare:  16 Amazing Oils for Your Skin
Infographic from Glamour.com
When it comes to skincare, natural oils may just be your skin's best friend.

Oils derived exclusively from fruits, nuts, seeds, herbs, flowers and other plants have unique properties that cleanse, heal and repair, calm and soothe, moisturize and renew, and protect the skin.

Some oils can be used to target and treat specific skin conditions and problems, such as aging, acne, scars and eczema.

One of the greatest advantages of using natural oils is that they do not contain industrial chemicals and toxic ingredients that are often found in commercial skincare products.  Some of these ingredients actually harm the skin and may even harm human health when they are absorbed by the body through the skin over a long period of time.

For many decades now, we've been warned to never, ever to leave the house without wearing a sunscreen with a high SPF.  Indeed, there are very good reasons to protect oneself from overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.  Overexposure to UV radiation is thought to cause premature aging of the skin, suppress the immune system and increase the risks for skin cancer, cataracts and other skin and eye damage.

On the other hand, underexposure to sunlight is thought be causing a vitamin D deficiency in many people.  Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with  increased risk of common cancers, autoimmune diseases, hypertension, infectious diseases, osteopenia, osteoporosis and fractures.

According to the Vitamin D Council, your body is usually able to get all the vitamin D it needs if you regularly expose enough bare skin to the sun.  To learn about safely exposing your bare skin to sunlight (ultraviolet B), read:  How Do I Get the Vitamin D My Body Needs?

Outside these guidelines, consider using a sunscreen that is not laden with toxic chemicals and other potentially dangerous ingredients that are contained in many of the commercial sunscreens.  A more natural alternative is to use certain vegetable, fruit, nut and seed oils that have natural SPF as this infographic illustrates.  These oils include:

✿ Carrot Seed Oil
✿ Raspberry Seed Oil
✿ Wheatgern Oil
✿ Avocado Oil
✿ Coconut Oil
✿ Olive Oil
✿ Macadamia Nut Oil
✿ Almond Oil
✿ Shea Butter
✿ Jojoba Oil

Healthy Hair - 3 DIY At Home Treatments [Infographic]

Healthy Hair - 3 DIY At Home Treatments
from UrbaneWomen.com
Most hair damage is caused by our many and various efforts to have more beautiful hair.  Blow drying, curling irons, flat irons, perms, bleaching, coloring, highlighting, extensions, teasing, over-brushing, tight ponytails and braids all contribute to breakage.

Many of the shampoos, conditioners, hairsprays and other commercial hair and beauty products that we use every day are laden with controversial industrial chemicals, most of which have not been assessed for safety and some of which are known to be toxic and harmful to human health.  (Read:  Ingredients to Avoid in Personal Care Products)

Certain ingredients in shampoos and other hair care products dry and strip the hair of moisture making it brittle, break down healthy hair proteins and cause other damage to both the scalp and the hair.

If you have damaged hair, why use more chemicals to try to repair the damage already caused by chemicals?  At home, DIY hair treatments using only natural ingredients are generally safe, easy and inexpensive.

This infographic illustrates three ways to repair hair breakage at home:

✿ Hot Oil Treatment
✿ Egg Yolk and Olive Oil Treatment
✿ Vitamin E Treatment

While olive oil is an excellent natural moisturizer for the skin and hair, coconut oil is another superb choice in natural hair care - it can be used to deeply condition hair, fight frizz and soothe the scalp.  Coconut oil can even be used as a shampoo, together with other natural ingredients.
