Natural Sunscreen:  10 Oils with SPF

For many decades now, we've been warned to never, ever to leave the house without wearing a sunscreen with a high SPF.  Indeed, there are very good reasons to protect oneself from overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.  Overexposure to UV radiation is thought to cause premature aging of the skin, suppress the immune system and increase the risks for skin cancer, cataracts and other skin and eye damage.

On the other hand, underexposure to sunlight is thought be causing a vitamin D deficiency in many people.  Vitamin D deficiency has been associated with  increased risk of common cancers, autoimmune diseases, hypertension, infectious diseases, osteopenia, osteoporosis and fractures.

According to the Vitamin D Council, your body is usually able to get all the vitamin D it needs if you regularly expose enough bare skin to the sun.  To learn about safely exposing your bare skin to sunlight (ultraviolet B), read:  How Do I Get the Vitamin D My Body Needs?

Outside these guidelines, consider using a sunscreen that is not laden with toxic chemicals and other potentially dangerous ingredients that are contained in many of the commercial sunscreens.  A more natural alternative is to use certain vegetable, fruit, nut and seed oils that have natural SPF as this infographic illustrates.  These oils include:

✿ Carrot Seed Oil
✿ Raspberry Seed Oil
✿ Wheatgern Oil
✿ Avocado Oil
✿ Coconut Oil
✿ Olive Oil
✿ Macadamia Nut Oil
✿ Almond Oil
✿ Shea Butter
✿ Jojoba Oil
