How to Remove Dark Eye Circles Naturally [Infographic]

How to Remove Dark Eye Circles and Bags Naturally
Infographic from StyleCraze

Dark Eye Circles and Bags

Dark circles and bags under and around the eyes are not very attractive.  They make us look tired, sick, and older.  Perhaps worst of all, they make us self-conscious and undermine our sense of confidence.

Causes

Discoloration and puffiness around the eyes can be caused by a number of things, including genetics, irregular sleep patterns especially sleep deprivation, stress, fatigue, illness, allergies, improper diet, skin irritants, sun exposure and aging.

Identifying the Cause

Of course the best way to correct dark eye circles and bags is to identify and address the cause or causes, many of which are related to or reflective of lifestyle.

✏️ Meditation, mindfulness techniques and/or yoga can help with stress management

✏️ Sleep hygiene and hacks as well as certain herbs can help improve sleep

✏️ A diet that includes a variety of fresh fruits and vegetables, as well certain dietary supplements, can help correct vitamin and mineral deficiencies

✏️ Drinking plenty of pure, clean water can help with dehydration

You can also look at a face mapping diagram for any clues to possible health issues.  For example, a shade of dark blue underneath the eyes can be a sign of adrenal fatigue.

Treatment

There are many products on the market designed to temporarily conceal or reduce the appearance of dark circles or reduce puffiness. There are also many natural, at-home remedies that work temporarily but that also can also have a more long-term curative effect.

Infographic

This infographic from StyleCraze illustrates some at-home, DIY natural remedies which utilize foods, beverages and other ingredients you probably already have at home, like cucumber, tomatoes, potatoes, almonds, tea bags and orange juice.  For more information and many additional natural remedies - 27 in all - please visit 27 Best Home Remedies to Remove Dark Circles Under Eyes Permanently.

Temporary Fixes for Sparse Brows

If you have sparse or no eyebrows because of plucking, waxing, shaving or an illness like adrenal fatigue, you have a couple of options.

You can use brow pencils, gel liners, cake powders and tints. Some women use waterproof lash lengthening and thickening mascara or even brush-on eyelash fibers to give their brows some color and volume.

The trouble with all of these types of products is that they are temporary and need to be applied every day.  Application takes time and a certain amount of skill so that brows look natural.  Re-application might be necessary after certain activities, like swimming or other exercise. Some products flake off or smear.

Additionally, many of these products can be pricey if they are good quality.

A More Permanent Solution

To avoid the hassle and expense of making eyebrows appear thicker, the best solution is a more permanent one:  grow, regrow, lengthen and thicken your brow hairs (or eyelashes for that matter).

This does require some dedication and patience but its well worth the effort.

Serums and Castor Oil

There are many brow and lash growth serums on the market yet the product that gets the most and best ratings is cold-pressed, organic castor oil.  You need look no further at Amazon to verify this.

Castor oil is rich in essential fatty acids, proteins and vitamin E and has been found to have several health and beauty benefits including triggering hair growth and promoting thicker hair.

This infographic from Good Health Academy explains a few uses of castor oil for hair health and growth as well as how to use castor oil to grow eyebrow hair.   Good Health Academy also has an in-depth and comprehensive article on using castor oil for eyebrows.  If you are thinking of using castor oil, please go to Castor Oil for Eyebrows - Everything You Need to Know (Good Health Academy).

How Does Skin Age? The Act of Aging [Infographic]

How and Why Skin Ages - Aging Process Explained
Preventing Aging of Skin
Infographic from JeNu
Aging Skin

As we grow older, our skin ages as part of the natural aging process.  It is perfectly normal, for example, for fine lines to appear at some point.  It is thought that genes play a role in when certain changes - like thinness, dryness and fine lines - in our skin occur.

Aside from the natural aging process and genetics, environment plays a significant role in the health and appearance of our skin.  Our lifestyle choices have an impact on whether or not, and how much, our skin ages prematurely.

Some environmental and lifestyle factors that are considered to influence premature aging including exposure to sun, smoking, excessive alcohol intake, lack of exercise, an unhealthy diet and use of harsh chemicals.

How Does Skin Age?

While we understand that natural aging is normal, and we also are aware what influences and accelerates premature aging, how, why and where aging starts may not be as clear.

Understanding how skin aging actually occurs may help us to make smarter choices in terms of caring for our skin, including selecting skincare products.

This infographic from JeNu illustrates and explains the skin aging process in some detail.  For example, it defines and explains collagen, elastin, sebum and melanin.

It also offers some tips and suggestions on preventing premature aging of skin.

5 Basic Skin Types and How to Identify and Care for
Your Skin Type - Infographic from SkinCell

Skin Type vs. Skin Concern

Knowing your skin type is essential in terms of caring for your skin and selecting products and procedures to help keep your skin beautiful and healthy.

Skin type is not the same as skin concern. Skin type involves the current qualities of skin whereas skin concern is a problem that can occur on any skin type.  Thus, for example, fine lines and wrinkles are a concern that can occur on dry, sensitive or any other skin type.

Why Go Natural

There are many good reasons to consider forgoing store bought commercial skincare and beauty products and using homemade natural ingredients instead.

For one thing, do-it-yourself (DIY) products tend to be much less expensive since many of the ingredients are already in your kitchen fridge or pantry.

Another compelling reason is compassion. The chemicals used in commercial products, as well as the products themselves, are tested on animals.  Animal testing often involves unimaginable cruelty.

But perhaps the most persuasive argument is health.  Not only the health of your skin - which, in and of itself is a big deal - since your skin is your body's largest "organ" but also your overall health.  Remember that whatever you put anywhere on your body is absorbed into your body through the skin.

>>> What Toxic Chemicals Are You Absorbing?

Toxins in Commercial Products

Most commercial skincare and beauty products are laden with chemicals that are known or suspected to be toxic to humans.  These include artificial colors, fragrance, stabilizers and preservatives.

Scientific studies done to date suggest that the chemicals found in commercial skincare and beauty products (as well as other self-care, hygiene and household products) can potentially have adverse health consequences.
These adverse health consequences include hormone imbalances, allergies, infertility and possibly even cancer.

Best Ingredients for Natural Skin Care

Nature has already provided us with the best skincare ingredients.  Natural skincare "products" contain vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, phytochemicals and other nutrients that have been studied for their health effects.

Many natural skin care ingredients are also antifungal, antibacterial and antiviral.

Infographic

This infographic called Your New Natural Skin Care Ritual from Dr. Josh Axe illustrates 13 of the "best" natural skincare ingredients:

 Coconut Oil
✿ Tea Tree Oil
✿ Apple Cider Vinegar
✿ Raw Honey
✿ Sea Salt
✿ Avocado
✿ Lemon Essential Oil
✿ Argan Oil
✿ Aloe Vera
✿ Jojoba Oil
✿ Almond Oil
✿ Shea Butter
✿ Castor Oil

The infographic also includes a few DIY skin care solutions for things like acne, bug bites and cellulite.

What Toxic Chemicals Are You Absorbing Through Your Skin?
Infographic from Natural Healthy Concepts

Toxic Chemical Soup

The health and wellness experts all tells us that we are living in a toxic, chemical soup.  Every single day, we are exposed to hundreds, if not thousands, of chemicals in our environment, most of which have not even been tested.  Of the small percentage that have actually been tested for human safety, many have been found to be toxic, even carcinogenic, to humans.

Absorption Through Skin

Although we breathe in and ingest many chemicals found in the air, water, food and household cleaning products, we also absorb chemicals through our skin.  It is estimated that as much as 60% of what we put on our skin is absorbed in our body.

Health Issues

Scientific studies point to links between the ingestion and absorption of certain chemicals and human health issues including skin allergies, cancer, infertility, birth defects, reproductive problems and learning disabilities.

Chemicals in Cosmetics and Skincare Products

The cosmetic and skincare industry is known for utilizing potentially harmful and dangerous chemicals in formulating its many products. Consequently, most of the commercial skin care products and cosmetics that we buy contain one or more of  these toxic ingredients.  It is vitally important to carefully read the list of ingredients on each product label.

Chemicals to Avoid - Infographic

Signs of Aging Skin

Signs of aging skin include the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles and loose, sagging skin.

As we age, we lose volume (primarily in the form of fat) and the natural elasticity in the skin.  Certain areas of the face and body tend to be more affected than others.  These areas include our face, neck, decolletage and arms.

Loss of volume and elasticity, and consequent sagging is a natural process that is considered irreversible but one that can be delayed and reduced.

Skin Tightening Options

Although cosmetic surgery, like face lifts, body lifts, arm lifts, etc. as well as laser skin tightening procedures are an option, there are much less expensive, invasive and significantly safer ways to improve the appearance of aging skin.

DIY Home Remedies

Many common foods, such as cucumber, banana, avocado, papaya, egg whites, yogurt and various oils contain ingredients that are thought or have been shown to have skin firming and tightening properties.

Detoxifying, deeply hydrating, moisturizing and plumping up skin cells with natural products goes a long way toward a healthier, firmer skin.

The benefits of using natural products are many including the avoidance of toxic chemicals that are often found in abundance in commercial products.

Chemicals in Cosmetics

According to the EWG's Skin Deep Cosmetics Database, personal care products are manufactured with 10,500 unique ingredients, some of which are known or suspected carcinogens, are toxic to the reproductive system or known to disrupt the endocrine system.

Personal care products include soap, body wash, lotion, shampoo, hair conditioner, toothpaste, mouthwash, lip balm, sunscreen, body lotion, shaving products and cosmetics (make-up).

Daily Exposure to Harmful Chemicals

According to the available data and surveys, it is estimated that the average U.S. woman uses 9-12 personal care products a day and is exposed to between approximately 126-128 different ingredients or chemicals.

Cosmetic products are designed to penetrate the skin.  Thus, chemicals, which are a major component of these products, get absorbed into the body and build up in human tissue, organs and fat cells over time.

Every day, hundreds of millions of people in the world needlessly expose themselves to harmful ingredients and toxic chemicals by using personal care products and potentially increasing their risk for cancer and chronic disease.

Reducing Chemical Exposure

In response to consumer demand, some cosmetic and personal care companies are beginning to formulate products with fewer chemicals.   And there are truly toxin-free brands now available. You can also make your own personal natural cosmetics and make-up using ingredients like organic coconut oil, baking soda, aloe vera, activated charcoal, and beet, spirulina, nutmeg and cacao powder.
