Healthy Hair - 3 DIY At Home Treatments
from UrbaneWomen.com
Most hair damage is caused by our many and various efforts to have more beautiful hair.  Blow drying, curling irons, flat irons, perms, bleaching, coloring, highlighting, extensions, teasing, over-brushing, tight ponytails and braids all contribute to breakage.

Many of the shampoos, conditioners, hairsprays and other commercial hair and beauty products that we use every day are laden with controversial industrial chemicals, most of which have not been assessed for safety and some of which are known to be toxic and harmful to human health.  (Read:  Ingredients to Avoid in Personal Care Products)

Certain ingredients in shampoos and other hair care products dry and strip the hair of moisture making it brittle, break down healthy hair proteins and cause other damage to both the scalp and the hair.

If you have damaged hair, why use more chemicals to try to repair the damage already caused by chemicals?  At home, DIY hair treatments using only natural ingredients are generally safe, easy and inexpensive.

This infographic illustrates three ways to repair hair breakage at home:

✿ Hot Oil Treatment
✿ Egg Yolk and Olive Oil Treatment
✿ Vitamin E Treatment

While olive oil is an excellent natural moisturizer for the skin and hair, coconut oil is another superb choice in natural hair care - it can be used to deeply condition hair, fight frizz and soothe the scalp.  Coconut oil can even be used as a shampoo, together with other natural ingredients.

Infographic: Ayurvedic Oil Pulling

Infographic: Oil Pulling Method and Health Benefits
Oil pulling has been used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for thousands of years to prevent and naturally treat a variety health conditions and ailments.

The most obvious health and beauty benefits of oil pulling are healthy gums, whiter teeth, a stronger jaw and soft lips.  Other benefits linked to oil pulling include relief from migraine headaches, hypertension, sinusitis, constipation, insomnia, inflammation of arthritis, asthma, constipation and chronic fatigue.

Oil pulling is also thought to help correct hormone imbalances, support normal liver function and naturally detoxify the body of  harmful toxins.

Traditionally, the oil of choice has been sesame oil.  Recent studies support the use of sesame oil due to its high concentration of antioxidants.

Some Ayurvedic practioners recommend alternating between a high quality, organic sesame oil, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil and sunflower oil in order to obtain a wide range of health benefits.

This infographic explains the method, which should be done on a daily basis.  For best results, use of a natural toothpaste and mouthwash is highly recommended.  Commercial toothpaste and mouthwash rinses generally contain many potentially harmful chemicals and toxic substances that are absorbed through the mouth in the same way that the healing antioxidants, vitamins and nutrients from healthy oils are absorbed during oil pulling.

These days there are many brands of natural toothpaste available.  These include Tom's of Maine, Nature's Gate, Dessert Essence, Earthpaste, Jason's and Himalaya Herbal Healthcare.

Potent Cocktails of Chemicals

Most commercial cosmetic and skincare products on the market today are potent cocktails of industrial chemicals.

Toxic Chemicals and Health

As studies continue to link these chemicals to various ailments and chronic health conditions, we are beginning to understand just how harmful these substances may be to our health.

It is becoming a cause of concern when one considers that, in the daily use of these toxic substances, they are being absorbed into our bodies through our skin, our largest organ.

Reducing and Limiting Our Exposure

The good news is that we can greatly reduce and limit or even completely eliminate our exposure to these industrial chemicals by avoiding commercial skincare, and beauty products and making some or all of our own skin care products at home.
