Warning.  Before using essential oils, one should be completely familiar with the properties of each type of oil and observe usage guidelines and cautions.  Some essential oils are not recommended for pregnant or nursing women or for people with certain illnesses.  Incorrect usage or prolonged exposure to certain oils may also cause skin, eyes, throat and lung irritation, inflammation or elevated oxidative stress.  Perhaps these cautions underscore the potency of essential oils.  Fortunately, there are many excellent books and online resources on this topic.

Oil pulling has been used in the Ayurvedic system of medicine for thousands of years to prevent and naturally treat a variety health conditions and ailments.

The most obvious health and beauty benefits of oil pulling are healthy gums, whiter teeth, a stronger jaw and soft lips.  Other benefits linked to oil pulling include relief from migraine headaches, hypertension, sinusitis, constipation, insomnia, inflammation of arthritis, asthma, constipation and chronic fatigue.

Oil pulling is also thought to help correct hormone imbalances, support normal liver function and naturally detoxify the body of  harmful toxins.

Traditionally, the oil of choice has been sesame oil.  Recent studies support the use of sesame oil due to its high concentration of antioxidants.

Some Ayurvedic practioners recommend alternating between a high quality, organic sesame oil, coconut oil, extra virgin olive oil and sunflower oil in order to obtain a wide range of health benefits.
