Epsom Salt Detox, Health and Beauty Benefits

During my week-long intensive Panchakarma detox treatment, I was instructed by the Ayurvedic practitioner to take daily baths in hot water and Epsom salt.

Panchakarma is an ancient Indian system of complete detoxification of chemical, environmental and other toxins from the blood, organs and muscles.  Harmful toxins are drawn out, released and eliminated through the skin, feces and urine utilizing a combination of diet, herbal preparations, tongue scraping, dry skin brushing, massage, meditation, yoga and stretching, walking, steam sauna, enemas and hot baths.

Epsom salt, a naturally occurring compound mineral of magnesium and sulfate, is known and highly valued in both ancient and modern cultures for its many health benefits, including relieving tension, stress, constipation, muscle cramps and soreness, and treating a variety of conditions like athlete's foot and nail fungus.

Epsom salt also has many beauty applications, including as a facial and body skin cleanser, softener and exfoliator, hair volumizer and conditioner, and excess oil and odor remover.

When using Epsom Salt in a bath to detoxify, be sure the bathtub is clean of any residue oils, soap, detergent or commercial cleaning chemicals as these can interfere with the action of the salt and/or defeat the purpose of the detox.  To naturally clean your tub, use a paste made from baking soda and water or vinegar and give it a good rinse afterwards.

Basic Detox Bath Instructions:

Pour 1-2 cups of Epsom salts under running hot water.  The water should be as hot as you can comfortably stand it.  Lay back and relax for 15 to 20 minutes while the water cools down.  Do not add additional hot water.  Do not rinse or shower off for at least four hours afterwards.  Drink plenty of water before, during and after the bath.

If you have high blood pressure or heart problems, are pregnant or have any other illness or medical condition, check with a qualified healthcare professional before using Epsom salt.
